Part 1:
Preparing Our Hearts for Tisha B'Av - An Experiential Learning Opportunity

Tuesday, July 21st, 6pm-7:30pm

@ Rabbi Dimitry and Erica's UWS home (address upon RSVP)
What are the origins of Tisha B'Av, a date on the Jewish calendar generally marked with fasting, grieving, and sitting low to the ground? What, exactly, are we mourning? Perhaps most importantly, why does the tragedy and calamity of Tisha B'Av matter to us today? Together we'll experientially prepare for Tisha B’Av (which starts Wednesday night) through song, learning, and togetherness.

Part 2:

Tisha B'Av Evening Services and Eikha @ Congregation Shearith Israel

Wednesday, July 22nd, 8:30pm

2 West 70th Street
Join Rabbi Dimitry at Shearith Israel, the historic Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue, for a moving, grand Tisha B'Av evening service (including the reading of Eikha, or the Book of Lamentations, and a Lecture by Rabbi Meir Soloveichik).

Shearith Israel's uniquely dramatic service tells of the tragedy of the destruction and sings the dirges of mourning for the Temple. Our Spanish & Portuguese service's rich musical tradition for the service on this day may go back to the time of the Spanish Expulsion, the anniversary of which is also observed on this date. The synagogue lights are dimmed, so that congregants follow services with small flashlights. Please join us to share in this powerful experience. NOTE: There will be a large crowd.
