Join us as we explore Harlem's Jewish past, a lost world lying just beneath the surface of the vibrant neighborhood that is Harlem today. We will explore how, in the early twentieth-century, Harlem became a laboratory for the ideas and institutions that define American Judaism today, and we will visit the sites of major Jewish communal institutions, the first shuls with pools, Reform temples, Civil Rights landmarks and more.
Throughout, we will focus on fascinating stories of Jewish continuity, sacrifice, innovation, and preservation that defined the way American Jews practice and understand Judaism today.
