Celebrating Endings

This week, not one but two of our community's Circles reached a siyum — a moment of completion, reflection, and celebration.

Our Women’s Learning Circle, led by Chelsea Garbell, completed eight months of learning, conversation, and study together on Sunday. And the very next day, the fourth cohort of the Harlem Service Corps gathered to toast the close of ten weeks spent giving back to our neighborhood, building relationships across difference, and putting their values into action.

A siyum does more than mark the end of a course. It helps us pause long enough to recognize what has been uncovered: the wisdom and Torah that came alive through these particular people, in this particular circle, and might otherwise have remained dormant.

The traditional Aramaic blessing recited at a siyum marking the conclusion of learning a Talmudic tractate begins with the phrase hadran alach... v'hadrach alan — "we will return to you... and you will return to us.” Meaningful learning has no end point. It travels with us, changes us, and invites us back.
